Reading a GovDeals Medical Equipment Listing

GovDeals is the largest auction source for surplus US hospital and government clinical equipment. It's also one of the lowest-price sources — which is exactly why condition risk is highest.

Condition codes

GovDeals condition codes are seller-reported, not inspected:

  • Usable — seller believes it works. Verify yourself.
  • Parts Only — seller believes it doesn't work.
  • Salvage — sold for scrap value.

A "Usable" code on a high-value item with no photos and no inspection availability is a red flag, not a guarantee.

What to read carefully

1. Photos vs description — photos carry more information than the minimal text. 2. Inspection availability — high-value lots often allow scheduled inspection. Send a biomed tech for items above $5,000. 3. Removal terms — buyer arranges loadout, typically within 10 business days. Budget for rigging and freight separately. 4. Bid history — many bidders late in the auction is a signal of competition.

Compare against peer comps

Every device page on Clinical Asset Index shows a Per-Source Benchmarking table. If the GovDeals median is $2,000 for that model and you're at $5,000, you're already at dealer pricing — verify condition is dealer-grade.
